CIF Appeals Committee Rules for Torrey Pines

Torrey Pines won a reprieve from the CIF State Appeals Committee, which ruled Tuesday that the 3-A Palomar League school can remain in that league rather than be forced to join the 2-A Avocado League for enrollment reasons.

Torrey Pines’ appeals to the Leaguing Committee, Coordinating Council and Board of Managers in the San Diego Section all were overturned, but upheld by the appeals panel.

The Leaguing Committee established that Torrey Pines, with a projected 1992-93 enrollment of 1,800 (13th in the 16-team Conference) should switch places with Rancho Bernardo, expected to have an enrollment of more than 2,800 in its third year.

The panel found the North County Conference’s rules allowed for factors other than enrollment to be used in determining league placement, such as strength of program, rivalries and geography.

“But the battle hasn’t been won,” said Ed Burke, Torrey Pines football coach.

“I think we’re more in limbo,” he said. “The state gave it back to the section to determine what action should be taken. That means back to the Board of Managers.

“Now we have two leagues angry at us rather than one. (The state’s) only decision was that our appeal about the move was correct.”
