Ward’s second no-hitter of the season came at an opportune time: against El Toro in the championship game of the Woodbridge tournament. Ward walked one batter and two reached base on errors, but El Toro never seriously threatened. Only one El Toro batter reached second base, and she was eliminated in a double play after Ward caught a line drive in the fourth inning. From then on Ward was virtually untouchable. “Probably in the last three innings she was throwing as well as I’ve seen her throw,†Woodbridge Coach Alan Dugard said. Ward won three games in the tournament--she beat Pacifica, 2-1, with a two-hitter and Garden Grove, 2-0, with a three-hitter in addition to El Toro--and was named the most valuable player of the tournament. Ward is 11-1 with a 0.56 ERA. She also leads the team in RBIs with 14.
