Shortstop Cey Leads El Camino Real to 7-2 West Valley League Win Over Taft

Junior shortstop Dan Cey had two doubles and drove in two runs Monday to lead El Camino Real High to a 7-2 victory over Taft in a West Valley League baseball game at El Camino Real.

Cey was two for three and raised his seasonal average to .489 (23 for 47). He has driven in 15 runs.

Randy Wolf, Evan Howland and Justin Balser each had two hits for El Camino Real (10-4, 6-3 in league play), which jumped to a 3-0 lead.

Senior right-hander Terry Morrow (6-2) earned the victory, with relief help from senior left-hander Jason Sipperley.

Jason Biller, Mike Sweeney and Greg Rosenzweig each had two hits for Taft (9-4-1, 7-2), which dropped its second game in a row. Junior left-hander Justin Siegel took the loss.

In other baseball games:

Cleveland 5, Granada Hills 4--With the score tied, 4-4, third baseman Mike Immken tripled home the winning run in the fifth inning and junior reliever Willie Morales pitched a scoreless 2 2/3 innings of relief in a North Valley League game at Cleveland.

Cleveland trailed, 2-0, before scoring three times in the third. Julio Marcial was hit by a pitch to open the inning and Cleveland loaded the bases on consecutive bunt singles by Robert Rundquist and Manny Valencia.

Brian Basowski drove in a run with a fielder’s choice and Dave Cipolla tied the score with a sacrifice fly. Doug Rubin followed with a single to hand Cleveland a 3-2 lead.

Marcial, Valencia and Rubin each had two hits in the game for Cleveland (9-4-1, 5-4).

Morales (3-1) pitched out of a bases-loaded jam in the seventh to finish off Granada Hills (10-4, 5-4).

Outfielder Scott Berger had two hits for Granada Hills. Senior right-hander Mike Cuthbert (3-1) took the loss.

Kennedy 10, San Fernando 4--Junior right-hander Miguel Diaz (4-0) went the distance and junior first baseman Jeff Tagliaferri had three hits to lead a 15-hit attack as Kennedy (13-5, 6-3) won a North Valley League game at San Fernando.

Tagliaferri had a double, two triples, four runs batted in and scored one run in four at-bats. Rick Nadeau, David Bourne, John Toven, Darrin McCall and Joe Bernas each had two hits for Kennedy.

Sal Macedo had a two-run pinch single that gave San Fernando a 4-1 lead in the fourth inning. However, Kennedy answered by scoring once in the fifth, three times in the sixth and five times in the seventh. Jose Nunez added a two-run triple for San Fernando.

Chatsworth 7, Reseda 3--David Stevenson’s three-run double in the fifth brought Chatsworth back from a 3-1 deficit in a West Valley League game at Reseda.

Stevenson, who also homered, had three hits and drove in five runs for Chatsworth (7-8, 4-5).

Right-hander Brandon Nickens (3-2) pitched a seven-hitter, struck out five and walked none for Chatsworth. Scott Monatlik also homered for Chatsworth, which had just one home run entering the game.

Sophomore Carlos Nunez hit his fifth home run for Reseda (2-11, 0-9) and teammate Juan Romero added a two-run double.

Alemany 12, Notre Dame 8--Led by junior third baseman Andy Dominique, Alemany out-slugged Notre Dame in a St. Paul tournament game at Notre Dame.

Dominique had four hits, including a three-run homer, to spark a six-run Alemany rally in the third.

Dave Castillo started the Alemany scoring with a three-run double in the first. Alemany (12-5-1) led by as many as seven runs before Notre Dame moved within 12-8 on Dave Supple’s three-run homer in the fifth.

Kevin Tate, Chris Tashima and Castillo each had two hits for Alemany. Dave Supple had three hits to lead Notre Dame (10-3-1). Teammates Jim Landress, Ryan Stromsborg and Cesar Hernandez each had two hits for the Knights.

Mike Corr (2-0) earned the victory in relief for Alemany, allowing Supple’s homer in four innings of work. Rich Igou took the loss for Notre Dame.

St. Anthony 10, Bell-Jeff 7--Bell-Jeff stranded 10 baserunners and left the bases loaded in the bottom of the seventh in a second-round game of the St. Paul tournament.

Bobby Machuca and John Bullock each had two hits for Bell-Jeff (2-11), which issued 12 bases on balls.

Royal 5, Bell Gardens 2--Dave Landaker’s two-run double high-lighted a five-run fifth inning and starter Terry Jones survived a two-on rally in the top of the seventh as host Royal (11-4) won a non-league game against Bell Gardens.

With runners at first and second, Laza Pedro, Bell Gardens’ sixth-place hitter, grounded to first to end the game. Jones (2-1) struck out nine.

Bell Gardens took a 1-0 lead in the top of the fifth before Royal’s rally. Ryan Martinez led off with a single. Matt Goebel, Gene Strojek and Dan Ezquierdo walked to tie the score, 1-1, before Landaker doubled.

Shane Slayton singled to make it 4-1. A wild pitch scored Landaker with the fifth run. Slayton led Royal with two hits.

Littlerock 7, Nordhoff 1--Chris Breck and Mark Sebek limited Littlerock to five hits, but five errors by host Nordhoff proved costly in a non-league game.

GIRLS’ SOFTBALL

Hart 6, Schurr 1--Lauren Fenstemaker pitched a one-hitter and Jamie Dean went four for four as Hart (7-4, 2-0) won a Foothill League game at Schurr.

HIGH SCHOOL GOLF

Granada Hills 399, Taft 406--Kevin Kurhajec of Granada Hills fired a two-over 74 to earn medalist honors in a City 5-A League showdown at Knollwood Golf Course. Both teams are 6-2 in league play.

MEN’S VOLLEYBALL

Pierce d. El Camino, 15-3, 15-5, 15-10--Lee Bradford had 14 kills and Rich Lake added 12 as host Pierce won a Western State Conference match.
