HIGH SCHOOL ROUNDUP : In other A Division Lions games:
Clairemont 6, Coronado 2--Clairemont (6-7-1) got a leadoff homer from Devin Henderson and a three-for-three day from Ryan Calafata to advance to today’s semifinals against Lincoln. Guy Murray had two hits, including a two-run homer, for Coronado.
Lincoln 5, La Jolla 2--Tobias Price struck out seven en route to his second consecutive one-hitter for Lincoln (6-7). Teammate Rolando Ortiz belted two doubles, good for one RBI, and scored two runs. Tony Wright had a pinch two-run single and Marvin Hood was two for two with an RBI and a sacrifice fly for the Hornets. La Jolla fell to 9-5.
La Jolla Country Day 5, Christian 3--LJCD got home runs from Noah Catsell and Andrew Cook.
Francis Parker 10, Bishop’s 3--Charles Pope smacked two triples, drove in two runs and scored another two, and teammate Devilin Millay was two for four with two RBIs for Francis Parker (6-4).
AAA Division
Monte Vista 9, Poway 5--Jeremy Lipsey hit a two-run home run, his fifth, and Kalin Foulds went two for three with two RBIs to lead Monte Vista (9-7-1) into today’s semifinals. Monarch second baseman Jason Darling’s diving stop saved two runs and halted a three-run uprising in the fifth by Poway. Monte Vista led 6-4 at the time. Monte Vista will play Sweetwater at 10:30 a.m. today at Monte Vista. Sixth-ranked Poway dropped to 10-3.
Sweetwater 2, Rancho Bernardo 1--Rancho Bernardo’s first-inning run kept Sweetwater from its third consecutive shutout, this one from Danny Mireles, but the Red Devils (8-5-1) have still allowed just two runs in their past 38 innings. Sweetwater won this one in the fourth. With two outs, Melvin Vargas walked, stole second and third, and was driven in by Luis Cuevas.
Castle Park 10, Granite Hills 1--Kiko Palacios doubled, slammed a two-run homer and drove in four runs for Castle Park (7-5). Vidal Valderas was two for three, including a double, as Castle Park advanced to the semifinals against Fallbrook. Granite Hills is 9-5.
Fallbrook 10, San Marcos 8--Steve Pack had three hits and scored two runs and Buddy Christensen scored two runs and drove in two more for Fallbrook (7-6-1). San Marcos’ Denny McAdams was three for four, including a double and a two-run homer.
San Dieguito 9, Morse 8--In his first at-bat of the season, sophomore pitcher Chris Kelly drilled a two-run double with two outs in the bottom of the eighth to end a wild a game. Andy Guenther went two for four with two stolen bases and two runs scored and Cole Liniak was two for three with an RBI for San Dieguito (7-10-1). The Mustangs survived eight errors and had 11 stolen bases.
Mt. Miguel 15, Patrick Henry 9--Chris Yerke was three for four for Patrick Henry (5-8-2).
Helix 7, Orange Glen 0--Senior left-hander Ryan Smith threw a two-hit shutout with 13 strikeouts and only two walks for Helix (10-6). Justin Morante went three for three with two RBIs to lead the Highlander offense.
Point Loma 12, Southwest 6--Dan Maringer went two for four with three RBIs and Brian Loyce had a double, a homer and an RBI to lead Point Loma (8-9-1).
AA Division
Hilltop 13, Hoover 1--Jorge Munoz had two doubles with three RBIs and Toby Hernandez went two for two with a double and four RBIs for Hilltop (5-9), which is 3-0 in the tournament and will play USDHS in today’s 10:30 a.m. semifinals at Hilltop.
USDHS 3, Valhalla 0--Fourth-ranked USDHS (12-2) cruised into today’s semifinals behind the shutout pitching of Kevin McDonald and Ian Hamilton. Rob Floco singled in one run and Tony Bruno doubled in the other two for the Dons, who scored all their runs in the fourth inning.
Mission Bay 11, San Pasqual 1--J.J. Ibarra went three for five with three RBIs and two runs scored and Shane Strohberg was three for three with two RBIs and a run for eighth-ranked Mission Bay (9-4, 3-0). The Bucs, who had already clinched a semifinal berth, play Madison today at 10:30 a.m. at Mission Bay.
Madison 2, Kearny 1--Brian Delgado knocked in Brian Presley with the winning run in the eighth inning as the Warhawks advanced. Presley (2-0) allowed four hits and struck out eight in going the distance for Madison (11-4).
University City 6, Torrey Pines 5--Travis Ahern escaped jams in the sixth and seventh to pick up the victory. Peter Uriarti was two for three with an RBI triple and Ryan Hammonds added a two-run homer for UC (5-9). Anthony Napoli went two for three and Ryan Lynch hit a two-run homer for Torrey Pines (4-8-1).
Crawford 2, El Cajon Valley 0--Brian Gaske had a two-hit shutout, striking out five, for Crawford (5-7). Teammate Robbie Wadas and Carl Marino each went two for three. ECV is 6-8.
Escondido 4, Santana 2--Mark Redman pitched a four-hitter and walked only one for Escondido (8-7). One hit was a solo homer by Jaron Ross. Santana is 11-5-1.
Serra 9, El Camino 4--Jeff Hooks went three for three with three RBIs and John White two for three with two runs to lead Serra (6-10). El Camino fell to 5-11.
El Dorado Invitational Tournament
Rancho Buena Vista 7, Las Vegas Cimarron 2--In Las Vegas, Mark Pallotto (two doubles) and Grady Griffith each went two for four with an RBI for RBV (9-6-1).
El Capitan 14, Las Vegas Green Valley 2--El Capitan’s Mike Leone went two for four with a home run and three RBIs and Mike Lennon two for four with three RBIs and four runs.
Las Vegas Western 13, El Capitan 6--Leone went two for two with an RBI, but El Capitan fell to 10-6.
