“Star Wars” Defense: Rockwell International Corp. in Seal Beach said Harris Corp.’s government aerospace systems division in Melbourne, Fla., will join a Rockwell team to develop a new system for early detection of nuclear missile launches as part of the “Star Wars” missile defense.
Harris will help design a variety of components in the “follow-on early warning” system for the Air Force. In addition to Harris, Rockwell is teamed with Aerojet Electronic Systems Division of Aerojet Inc. in Azusa.
The Air Force plans to use the warning system to replace the 20-year-old Defense Support Program. The system is intended to provide more accurate warning of potential missile attacks.
