CSUN Hits Put Hurt on Toreros
Four University of San Diego pitchers were pounded for 16 hits as visiting Cal State Northridge routed the Toreros, 11-4, in a nonconference game Tuesday.
CSUN (23-7-1), ranked 16th by Baseball America, scored two runs in the first inning and then chased starter Pat James (3-2) in the second with four more runs.
The Matadors’ Scott Richardson led the hit parade with four hits, including a triple, and three RBIs. Scott Mowl had a two-run homer in the sixth inning, his fifth. Mike Solar had a double and three RBIs.
CSUN’s John Bushart (3-1) tossed a complete game, allowing eight hits and striking out three. USD (17-19) got triples from Brady Clark and Tony Moeder and a double from John Fenn.
UC San Diego, ranked sixth in Division III, overcame a two-run deficit to defeat host Cal Baptist, 10-5, in a nonconference game. The Tritons’ Marcos Magdaleno went three for four, including a solo homer in the ninth. Ernie Isola was two for three with two RBIs and David Valdez went two for three for UCSD (16-3-1). Cal Baptist fell to 10-21.
Pitcher Rick Navarro struck out 10 in seven innings to help No. 30 San Diego State (27-7) beat visiting UC Riverside, 4-1. Navarro, who entered the game with a 1.67 ERA, improved to 8-0 after the Aztecs scored all four runs in the second inning. Tony Enomoto opened the scoring with a two-run single. Division II Riverside fell to 23-12.
Claremont scored four runs in the third on five hits after two were out and went on to beat visiting Point Loma Nazarene, 5-2. PLNC fell to 13-18-1, Claremont improved to 13-15.
MEN’S VOLLEYBALL
San Diego State defeated host UC San Diego, 12-15, 15-9, 15-7, 15-13, in a nonconference match behind John Hyden’s 28 kills. Rob Thomas had 18 kills and Erin Boss added 16 kills for the Aztecs (8-17). Lamson Lam led UCSD (2-13) with 26 kills and Bruce Williams had 17.
SOFTBALL
Robin Rabello went four for four with a double and two triples and pitched 1 2/3 scoreless innings to pick up the victory and earn Point Loma Nazarene a 4-3 victory over host Christ College Irvine in the second game of a doubleheader. PLNC’s Becky Miller scored the winning run when CCI’s catcher threw the ball into left field on a pick-off play. CCI, which won the first game, 8-2, is 3-27-1 and 1-10-1. PLNC is 10-12 overall and 4-8 in Golden Athletic Conference play.
Former Mission Bay standout Tiffany Wasilewski (11-2) tossed a four-hitter in the first game and shut down visiting La Verne in the seventh inning of the nightcap to win both games as the University of San Diego swept a doubleheader, 4-1 and 5-4. Freshman Brittany Volk broke a 1-1 tie with a two-run triple, her first hit of the season, in the first game. Former Madison player June Andrews’ bases-loaded single in the bottom of the seventh of the second game lifted the Toreras to 18-4.
