Helping the Poor

California religious leaders are to be commended for petitioning Gov. Pete Wilson to restore cuts in state aid to our poorer citizens (March 26). I also agree that higher taxes on our more affluent citizens are appropriate to pay for the costs of this aid.
I would be more impressed, however, if these same religious leaders would forgo the fat tax exemptions their organizations enjoy in order to help pay for this aid. After all, “charity begins at home.”
