HIGH SCHOOL ROUNDUP : Grossmont Adds to Streak in Victory over Santana
Grossmont’s baseball team may have had its winning streak stopped at 25 last week, but its undefeated streak improved to 28 Tuesday with a 6-4 victory against Santana in the Grossmont Conference Tournament.
At Grossmont, Wynter Phoenix hit a two-run double in the third inning, to help the second-ranked Foothillers jump to a 3-1 lead. Jason Eskridge went five innings, gave up three hits and one earned run before Mark Olson came in for the final two innings, allowing one hit and picking up his third save.
Robby Coddington was two for two, scored three runs, drove in two runs and homered for Grossmont (9-0-1, 3-0-1 in the tournament). John Conen picked up two hits and batted in a run for Santana (9-3-1, 1-2-1 in the tournament.)
Other Grossmont Conference games:
Helix 12, El Cajon 3--Helix went homer crazy; Bobby Miller hit two, Adam Bright delivered a two-run shot and Gregg Wilbur added another in the sixth. Mario Sanchez banged out three hits, all doubles, and had four RBIs. Helix is 6-5, 3-1 in the tournament.
El Capitan 6, Granite Hills 5--Benjamin Kindreich went one for two with two walks and two RBIs, including the game-winner in the seventh. He knocked in Dylan Smith, who led off with a one-out single. Smith scored twice on two hits. EL Capitan is 7-4, 4-0 in the tournament.
West Hills 5, Monte Vista 3--Erik Priddy was two for two with a run scored for West Hills (4-5-1, 1-3 in the tournament.)
Avocado League
Escondido 4, El Camino 0--Jason Aguilar (2-0) went the distance and gave up seven hits in the shutout. He also picked up two hits and scored a run for Escondido (5-5, 2-0). Jeff Nessler went three for four and scored twice.
City Conference Tournament
Patrick Henry 14, University City 2--Dennis Twombley went wild for the Patriots (4-6-2, 3-1 in the tournament), chalking up four hits--including two doubles--and three RBIs.
Palomar League
Poway 4, Fallbrook 3--This makeup game at No. 6 Poway (7-1, 2-0) went 10 innings before the Jeff Pattison closed it out with his solo home run. Poway forced the extra innings by tying it up in the bottom of the seven seventh, where the Titans scored off an error and a single, with two outs. Steve Boros, David Kelch, Pattison and Jeff Wight all had two hits for Poway (7-1, 2-0).
SOFTBALL / Palomar League
Poway 11, Fallbrook 2--Robin Jensen was effective on the mound and against it. She went two for four with three RBIs, and struck out nine and walked two for Poway (5-4, 1-1).
