Sportscaster Cawood Ledford, who has broadcast the last 14 NCAA Final Fours for the NCAA Radio Network, will retire after Monday night’s championship game.

Ledford, 65, the voice of Kentucky basketball for the last 39 years, plans to devote his time to several businesses he owns. He also owns several race horses.

Charlie McAlexander, who broadcasts Vanderbilt basketball games, will replace Ledford for the 1993 Final Four at New Orleans.

Michigan, which reached the Final Four for the second time in the last four seasons, also reached the final four in hockey this season. It is only the second time that a school has advanced to the national semifinals in the two sports in the same season.

Michigan did it in 1964. The Wolverines lost to Duke in a semifinal basketball game and defeated Kansas State in the consolation game to finish third.

The hockey team fared better, defeating Denver in the championship game.

Indiana Coach Bob Knight has a 7-2 record in NCAA Final Four games. After losing to UCLA in the 1973 semifinals, Knight had guided the Hoosiers to seven consecutive victories before Saturday’s loss to Duke.

The Metrodome crowd of 52,379 was the third largest for a single session in Final Four history. The record of 64,959 was set in 1987 at the Louisiana Superdome.
