PREP ROUNDUP : Newport Harbor Makes Quick Work of Woodbridge in Volleyball Sweep
Newport Harbor’s volleyball team doesn’t want to waste any time in its pursuit of the Sea View League championship this season.
The Sailors needed just over an hour to sweep Woodbridge, considered its toughest league opponent, Friday night at the Newport Harbor gym.
Newport Harbor’s 15-6, 15-9, 15-10 victory was its second consecutive sweep, after a victory over Corona del Mar in the league opener Tuesday night.
“This was a good match for us,†Newport Harbor Coach Dan Glenn said. “We passed much better tonight than we did against Corona, and we were able to work the middle more.â€
Which meant a big matches for Frank Griffo and Justin McIntee, the Sailors’ senior middle blockers.
Griffo had 13 kills and five blocks and McIntee added 11 kills and five blocks for the Sailors (8-0, 2-0 in league).
Junior Mark McAnlis had 13 kills and two blocks for Newport Harbor, top-ranked in Orange County and third in the Southern Section 4-A. Sailor setter Russ Gan finished with 45 assists.
Newport Harbor finished with 17 blocks, which kept Woodbridge outside hitter Krister Olsson from dominating the match.
“Krister is their big gun and we knew they would be going to their big gun,†Glenn said. “But fortunately we had Frank going against him most of the time. And this was the best Justin has blocked all season.â€
“We were close all the way through,†Woodbridge Coach Rich Polk said. “But we just couldn’t finish the games. We made a lot of little mistakes that hurt us. And Newport doesn’t make many mistakes.â€
