On a day when the top three seeded players easily advanced, No. 4 Jennifer Capriati was upset at the $550,000 Family Circle Cup at Hilton Head, S.C.
Capriati was eliminated by unseeded Veronika Martinek, 6-4, 1-6, 6-4. The victory was the biggest victory in the German player’s career. Martinek, 19, is ranked No. 83 in the world. Capriati is No. 6.
Top-seeded Gabriela Sabatini, second-seeded Martina Navratilova and third-seeded Arantxa Sanchez Vicario all advanced, winning in straight sets in second-round matches.
