50 Years of Docs: The Academy Awards’ documentary category--the subject of criticism this year because of its nominations--is having its 50th birthday. To celebrate, tonight’s Academy Awards show on ABC will include a tribute to the documentary tradition produced by Richard Schickel, film critic for Time magazine and a documentary filmmaker. Highlights include scenes from “Harlan County U.S.A.,” about a United Mine Workers strike, and “Common Threads,” about an AIDS quilt.
