The Bell City Council has voted to spearhead a grant application that could bring up to $500,000 to the Southeast area to combat gang activities.

The funds are available through the California Criminal Justice Planning Department and would be spent organizing gang-eradication and gang-awareness programs in Bell, Bell Gardens, Cudahy, Maywood, South Gate and Huntington Park. There are no established anti-gang units in any of the six cities.

“Gang activity is on the rise all over the Southeast,†Bell City Administrator John Bramble said. “We haven’t had any money or manpower to be effective, and we won’t be able to do anything (to get rid of the gangs) unless we do it collectively.â€

Bramble said he hopes the funding is approved in time to start programs in the area’s schools in September.
