Despite the recession, the city is making significant economic advances, Mayor Donna Smith said last week in a State of the City address sponsored by the Pomona Jaycees.

The seven-story Fairplex Sheraton Hotel now under construction, the recently completed $50-million expansion of Pomona Valley Hospital Medical Center and plans for a new shopping center anchored by Toys R Us and Kids R Us reflect the city’s renewed vitality, Smith said.

In addition, she said, the city is making progress in reducing its crime rate, with the number of gang murders dropping sharply last year.

The city also paved 45 miles of streets in 1991 at a cost of $3.5 million and will refurbish a rail station for the opening of commuter rail service between Los Angeles and Pomona this October.

“Pomona is dynamic, is marketable, is growing, is expanding and possesses incredible potential,†Smith told the audience of about 100 Jaycees and civic leaders.
