PISCATAWAY, N.J. — Steve Worthy scored eight consecutive points as Rutgers built an 18-point lead before holding off James Madison, 73-69, Friday night in the final first-round game of the National Invitation Tournament.
Rutgers (16-14) will play host to Manhattan (24-8) Monday night.
The Scarlet Knights appeared to have the game in hand early in the second half when Worthy made two three-pointers and a layup in a 9-0 run that gave Rutgers a 51-33 lead with 15:29 to play.
But the Dukes (21-11) rallied over the next nine minutes and closed to within 71-69 on a layup by Bryan Edwards with 10 seconds to play. Worthy sank two free throws with five seconds left.
