KANSAS CITY, Mo. — Tony Smith’s seventh three-pointer of the game, a record-tying 428th of his career, helped Pfeiffer (N.C.) thwart a Biola rally Friday night, 99-83, in the quarterfinals of the NAIA tournament.
Smith’s three-pointer with 3:03 left gave the Falcons (30-4) an 86-76 lead.
Phil Gebhardt of Malone set the record of 428 three-pointers with six on Tuesday night when the Danton, Ohio, school was eliminated by Birmingham Southern. Smith, who had 28 points, will go for the record when the Falcons meet top-ranked defending champion Oklahoma City in the semifinals.
Pfeiffer led by 21 points early in the second half, but a 25-4 run got Biola (33-4) back into the game.
Keishaun Darthard had 27 points for the Eagles.
