Nominee to Head FAA Steps Aside

WASHINGTON — Jerry R. Curry on Friday withdrew his nomination to head the Federal Aviation Administration, cutting a deal with the White House to leave quietly in exchange for another job, Administration sources said.
Curry, head of the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration, said he had withdrawn his nomination and will leave the traffic safety agency to take another job in government. He did not say what that job would be.
Curry’s decision ends a standoff within the White House. After changing its mind on the nomination, the Administration could not immediately persuade Curry to withdraw, the sources said. The White House worked to avert a public squabble with Curry, a black conservative with ties to the religious right.
There was no indication who would be nominated to the top FAA post, vacated when former administrator James Busey was promoted to the No. 2 job at the Transportation Department.
