PEN’s Resolution on Mexico
I don’t know Wolin and I’m not familiar with the PEN probe into alleged abuses of journalists in Mexico.
However, as a member of PEN Center West for the past four years, I can understand her frustration with the conduct of its governing board. The leaders of the Los Angeles PEN chapter have often overwhelmed me with their shallowness. They may be activists for the “freedom to write” but their main activity seems to be planning Brentwood garden parties. They are situation-comedy liberals.
So I am not surprised at Wolin’s report that the PEN West board went into closed-door session when she raised her ethical objections and then never even bothered to address them. That would have required a consideration of the facts and I suspect that our local PEN leaders don’t need to bother with facts since they already know what they think.
