The addition of 2.3 million subscribers during the 12 months made 1991 a record-breaking year, said the Cellular Telecommunications Industry Assn. It averages to 6,300 new cellular phone users every day.

The industry reported service revenue of $3.1 billion for the second half of the year, a record for a six-month period. The total for the entire year was $5.7 billion, a record.
