Mike Moutrey’s two doubles and Ryan Arakaki’s game-winning single helped Huntington Beach defeat El Dorado, 8-3, in the Loara Baseball Tournament championship game Saturday at Glover Stadium.
With one out in the top of the fourth and the scored tied, 3-3, Mike Janson walked, went to third on a throwing error, and scored the winning run on Arakaki’s single. Moutrey doubled to drive in a run and Graig Daedelow doubled to drive in two more.
“We just received an old-fashioned licking,” El Dorado Coach Steve Gullotti said. “After we tied the game, we needed to hold them, but we walked their No. 8 batter (Janson) and that hurt us.”
Said Huntington Beach Coach Mike Dodd: “We got off to a good start against (losing pitcher) Shawn Holcomb, then jumped on them in the fourth inning and caught them by surprise.”
Huntington Beach (5-0), last won the tournament in 1988. El Dorado (4-1), entered the tournament as the No. 1 team in the county and the No. 2 team in Baseball America’s preseason poll.
Moutrey, who shared most valuable player honors with El Dorado’s Tyson DowDell, led off the first inning with a double, advanced to third on Daedelow’s sacrifice, and scored on Howie Clark’s triple. Jake Smith singled home Clark to give Huntington Beach a 2-0 lead.
