OUTLOOK
With eight returning starters from last year’s third-place team, Mission Viejo figures to be a strong factor in the race this season if the Diablos can solve one problem. That problem is a big one, however, since it involves the replacement of last season’s ace pitcher, Kerin Dall (13-7), who graduated and is now at the University of South Florida. Cunningham is looking at Lemire, who was 4-2 last season, Laakso and Hemmer, a left-hander. If the Diablos can find a dependable performer among those three, they could give El Toro and Irvine a strong challenge. Briesenick, a first-team all-league shortstop, hit .320 and anchors a solid, experienced infield. Laakso, a second-team all-league center fielder, leads a seasoned outfield. Cunningham says his players performed well in the clutch last season against tough competition. That experience should serve them well this spring.
