Archibald T. Steele; Journalist Reported From China in the ‘30s

Archibald T. Steele, 89, one of the first Western journalists to report from inside China in the early 1930s. During a lengthy career, Steele was a foreign or war correspondent for United Press, the New York Times, the Chicago Daily News and, finally, the New York Herald Tribune. In the 1950s, he predicted that anti-American sentiment sweeping North Vietnam would result in the United States supporting President Ngo Dinh Diem of South Vietnam and subsequent civil war. Steele was the author of “The American People and China.†In Sedona, Ariz., on Feb. 25 of cancer.
