A new flag will soon fly over the city.

City Council members agreed this week to raise a flag daily that commemorates service personnel who remain unaccounted for in the Vietnam War.

The flag will be raised for the first time in a ceremony honoring Vietnam prisoners of war and military members missing in action. The date and location of the ceremony are yet to be set.

The proposal to fly a flag honoring POWs and MIAs was suggested this week by the Costa Mesa-based support group, Vietnam Vets Reunited.

“The brave souls that remain in captivity deserve at least this amount of honorable recognition,†Frances Schuster, the group’s secretary, wrote in a letter to the council.

The group has approached various cities with the proposal and so far has received approval from Costa Mesa, Irvine, Huntington Beach, Laguna Beach and Santa Ana, Schuster said. The group honors POW/MIA from all U.S. wars, including the Persian Gulf War.

Councilman Mike Spurgeon, a Vietnam veteran, made the motion to accept the group’s proposal, saying it was “with great honor†that the city agreed to fly the POW/MIA flag. The council’s unanimous approval of the proposal won applause from the audience.
