Ford Is Near a Huge Taxi Contract: Ford Motor Co. is close to winning a $550-million contract to build 65,000 taxis for Argentina, Toronto’s Globe and Mail newspaper reported. The taxis, which would be built at a Ford facility in Canada, would be the largest export sale in Ford’s history, Ford Canada said. Ford’s North American Automotive Operations unit made the bid, and Ford Canada’s Oakville, Ontario, plant would supply the four-door Ford Tempos, said James Hartford of Ford Motor Co. of Canada. Hartford said discussions are underway for the sale of another 60,000 cars, which would bring the total order to more than $1 billion. Toronto-based Phoenix Plus Inc. plans to buy the cars and sell them to individual Argentine taxi owners.
