OUTLOOK
With nine key players returning, including league MVP Mallett and Ortega (17-2) on the mound, the Highlanders appear to be more than capable of defending their league title. Briquelet takes over after teaching at the school the past two years. She has seven years of previous coaching experience at Agoura and Hueneme high schools. La Habra lost only two seniors from last season, right fielder Tricia Seminoff and third baseman Crystal Streavel. La Habra has solid pitching, strong defense and depth with seven starters returning. Ortega pitched three no-hitters and struck out 145 last year, and Mallett hit .414 along with her strong play at second base. Turner and Bakke also were all-league players last year. Hitting, which was not a strong suit last season, is questionable again. The Highlanders also hope to make amends for last season’s quick elimination in the playoffs, where they lost to San Gabriel in the first round.
