BASKETBALL GIRLS’ PLAYOFF SEMIFINALS : Freshman Rigley Scores 23 as Alemany Beats Rubidoux
Freshman Samantha Rigley scored 23 points and teammates Rachel Corelli and Kelly McKay each scored 15 to lead Alemany High to a 73-61 victory over Rubidoux in a girls’ Southern Section Division II-A playoff semifinal win at Rubidoux.
Holy Martyrs 43, Webb 33--Sophomore Aline Altibarmakian scored a game-high 14 points to lead host Holy Martyrs to its first Division V-AA final berth.
Brea-Olinda 63, Newport Harbor 50--The top-seeded Ladycats made only seven of 13 free throws in the fourth quarter, finishing 12 of 22 for the game, but they still coasted to a Division III-AA victory at Sonora High.
Also, Brea-Olinda (27-2), which will face the El Dorado-Morningside winner Saturday at the UC Irvine Bren Center, was forced out of its normal man-to-man defense, and played a 2-3 match-up zone.
And Newport Harbor (17-9) played without its head coach, Shannon Jakosky.
According to Newport Harbor athletic director Eric Tweit, Jakosky was suspended indefinitely for violating a Southern Section rule for holding a team session to watch game films last Sunday.
Tuesday, Jakosky said she was unaware of the rule, and was forced to watch the game from the bleachers.
And Jakosky watched Brea-Olinda sophomore point guard Nicole Erickson spark the Ladycats with 24 points and six assists.
