Master’s Upends Cal Baptist in NAIA Basketball Playoffs
Dave Humphreys made a pair of free throws with 12 seconds left to seal a 61-58 victory over Cal Baptist in a first-round game of the NAIA District 3 men’s basketball playoffs Tuesday night at The Master’s.
The win marked the first postseason victory in the school’s history and sent the Mustangs into the semifinal round where they will meet Westmont on Saturday at Whittier College.
Cal Baptist had an opportunity to tie the score in the final seconds, but Lance Williams missed a three-point attempt and two ensuing tips also failed.
Jason Webster paced The Master’s (21-10, 11-2 in district play) with game highs of 23 points and 11 rebounds. Teammate Joe Jon Bryant added 15 points.
Williams led the Lancers (17-14, 9-10) with 15 points and Neal Zwart contributed 14.
The Master’s led, 55-50 with four minutes left, but Williams hit consecutive three-point shots to put Cal Baptist ahead, 56-55, with 3 minutes 11 seconds left.
Terry Minnoy’s 15-foot jump shot 26 seconds later put the Mustangs ahead for good.
