Just two hours after their escape, two male inmates at the James A. Musick Branch Jail were captured Sunday when an off-duty sheriff’s deputy saw them emerge from some bushes near the jail, a Sheriff’s Department spokesman said.

The inmates, Martin Mendoza Ortega, 21, of Stanton and Juventino Pulagren Torres, 28, listed as a transient, were arrested and taken to the Intake Release Center in Santa Ana, Sheriff’s Lt. Richard J. Olson said.

Olson said both inmates fled from the minimum security facility by foot toward an industrial park. Deputies and a K-9 unit gave chase but were unable to find the escapees until the off-duty deputy spotted them emerging from some bushes in the area at about 8:25 p.m.

The inmates had been jailed on narcotics violations and were not considered dangerous, Olson said.
