The Colonists feature some of the league’s better pitching with Rivera and Navarrette. Rivera was 7-1 with a 2.75 earned-run average last season, despite pulling a muscle in his back and missing the final six games of the season. “We were 7-2 in league when Angel got hurt,� Torres said. “We lost five of our last six without him.� Navarrette had a promising freshman season with a 3-1 record and a 3.25 ERA. Geary and Dean-Yeager are the team’s best hitters, with Geary batting .333 last season and Dean-Yeager .300. “I think David (Geary) has turned into one of the better players in the league,� Torres said. But Torres said the Colonists have one major flaw--they managed only one home run last season. He expects more power from this year’s team. “Kafoury and Dean-Yeager are probably our two best power guys,� he said. The Colonists have traditionally been contenders in the league race, finishing with a combined 40-19-1 record over the past four years. “This has turned out to be a very, very competitive league,� Torres said. “It was a real good race last year. There were five different playoff possibilities going into the final game.�
