SOUTHERN SECTION SOCCER PLAYOFFS
In other Division 1-A boys’ soccer:
Corona del Mar 2, Troy 1--Senior Travis Grant scored both goals for visiting Corona del Mar. Grant, a forward, made the first goal 17 minutes into the first half. The second goal came after Grant took a long pass from teammate Taylor Donovan.
Jeff Doman scored Troy’s only goal midway through the second half. Goalie Ryan Muzzy had eight saves for the Sea Kings.
The Sea Kings (8-14-1) will play Walnut, a 3-0 winner over Santa Paula, in the quarterfinals Friday at a site to be determined.
Saddleback 4, El Monte 1--Jose Escudero scored three goals, giving him 24 for the season, for host Saddleback (15-4-1), which led, 2-0, at the half. Hember Ortiz scored 12 minutes into the second half for El Monte (17-3-3) to cut Saddleback’s lead to 2-1, but George Guerrero scored on a penalty kick seven minutes later. Saddleback will play La Canada, a 1-0 winner over Sierra Vista, in the quarterfinals Friday.
In Division 2-A girls’ soccer:
Valencia 2, Temecula Valley 1--With less than two minutes left to play, senior Heather May took a pass from Michele Lytle to score the winning goal for host Valencia (9-6-7). Judy Hlavac scored the other goal. Tamara Puls of Temecula Valley (19-4) tied the score midway through the second half, but good defense and Tiger goalie Brandi Bermosk’s five saves held the Sunkist League champions to the single goal.
Valencia will play No. 1-seeded Whittier La Serna, a 5-0 winner over Calabassas, in the quarterfinals Friday.
Corona 2, Western 0--Kara Reuvers scored on a cross by Kelli Perkins for Corona midway through the first half. Kara diPaolo scored in the first minute of the game on a breakaway.
