SOUTHERN SECTION BOYS’ BASKETBALL PLAYOFFS : DIVISION I-A ROUNDUP : Marina Is Latest Victim of High-Scoring Fay
Lance Fay scored 38 points to help Ventura Buena to a 97-77 victory over Marina in a Division I-A boys’ basketball playoff game Tuesday.
The leading scorer in the Southern Section during the regular season at 30.4 points, Fay has hit 77 points in two playoff games. He set Buena’s single-season scoring record in the third quarter and needs just eight points in the Bulldogs’ quarterfinal playoff game to establish the career record.
Andy Saint added 17 points and led the Bulldogs (22-4) with 12 rebounds. Nick Houchin added 14 points and six rebounds, and Jeff Dunn added 10 points and four rebounds.
Darren Crooks led Marina (18-10) with 17 points, and he had 11 rebounds. B.J. Babic and Matt Keim each scored 15 points, and Vlad Nieto came off the bench to score 14. Babic led the Vikings in rebounds with 13.
Buena led, 40-22, at halftime and forced Marina into 14 turnovers. The Vikings came back in the third quarter but could get no closer than 11 points with about four minutes left in the game.
