Holiday Bowl organizers said Tuesday the payoff per team from the 1991 bowl was $1.3 million, the highest payoff for the 11th consecutive year.

Richard Howard, president of Sanwa Bank of California, was introduced as president of the 1992 Holiday Bowl, which will be played Dec. 30. Howard has been on the bowl’s team selection committee and served as bowl treasurer.

BASEBALL

San Diego State catcher Rick Page drove in two runs with a double and outfielder Brent Ferguson two more with a triple in a six-run fourth inning as the Aztecs (8-5) routed Point Loma Nazarene, 11-2, at Smith Field.

Rick Navarro (3-0) struck out eight in six innings for the victory. Page and Ferguson each went two for four. Teammate Tony Robertson had two doubles and two RBIs. PLNC is 3-5-1.

UCLA scored five runs in the bottom of the eighth to thwart an upset bid by the University of San Diego, 10-9.

Tony Moeder went four for five and drove in four runs for USD.

WOMEN’S BASKETBALL

Kathleen Alvarez and Cari Young, playing in their final game at UCSD, combined for 41 points to lead the host Tritons to a 99-55 Division III victory. Young finished her career as the all-time scoring leader in UCSD history with 1,254 points.

Southwestern opens its bid for the California State Community College title tonight when it travels to eighth-seeded Antelope Valley. Ninth-seeded Southwestern, co-champion of the Pacific Coast Conference with San Diego Mesa, defeated Antelope Valley, 89-76, in a nonconference game at Chula Vista, Dec. 13.

BOXING

Robert Allen of Camp Pendleton and Reginald Blackmon of San Diego were winners in the second round of the U.S. Amateur Boxing Championships at Colorado Springs, Colo. Allen, a 156-pounder, won on retirement over Joe Hollis of Apopka, Fla., in the second round. Blackmon, a 201-pounder, won on retirement over Jean-Paul Griffin of Oxnard in the second round. Ivan Clark of San Diego lost a 3-0 decision to William Joppy of Silver Springs, Md., in the 165-pound division.
