Heavy Tipper Takes Early Lead and Upsets Los Alamitos Rivals
- Share via
Heavy Tipper, the top stakes pacing colt in California year ago, took the lead before the half-mile mark in Saturday night’s $17,000 Invitational Pace at Los Alamitos Race Course and never looked back.
Heavy Tipper made the same move last week but ended up getting caught on the outside against Vance Lobell. Saturday night, Heavy Tipper made the front, and Rick Kuebler guided the speedy 4-year-old gelding to his second victory of the season.
The son of Denali, owned by Jim Coats, paced the mile in 1:55 1/5, only one-fifth of a second off his lifetime best.
Positive Spirit got a perfect pocket trip and finished second and Till We Meet Again was third in his seasonal debut at Los Alamitos.
Heavy Tipper, trained by Paul Blumenfeld, paid $16 for the victory.
