SCENE ON THE STREET : They’re a Braid Apart
- Share via
When it comes to hair, black people wanting to return to their roots are into cornrowing in a big way. (The braids are said to have originated in Africa.)
It’s a style that swings, for one thing. It has a certain heft. You can just turn your head, and heads will turn.
Those who’ve got it tell those who want it to be careful about their stylist. That hairdresser with the voice that does a chain-saw massacre on your nerves? Uh-uh! You want a person who’ll row, row gently down the stream.
Done right, it takes a long time. One glance at some of these styles seen in Pasadena, Pomona, and Temple City, and you can see why.
