SAN DIEGO — Antonio Elias’ modernized Santa Cruz 70 Ole led the ninth biennial race to Manzanillo on the first day out Saturday as the fleet struggled in light southeast headwinds of 6 to 7 knots.
The Mexico City businessman scored his first big victory in the Long Beach-to-Cabo San Lucas race last November after lightening the boat and adding new sails and rigging.
Ole was only 115 miles along the 1,100-nautical mile track after 24 hours. Roy Disney’s SC 70 Pyewacket was 116 miles along but farther off the rhumb (direct) line to the west.
Next came the Doug Baker/Dick Pennington Cheetah, Brack Duker’s Evolution and Les Crouch’s Maverick.
Thursday’s five starters were led by Robert Kahn’s Jano, a 43-foot Frers, which was 49 miles ahead of Ole.
