There’s no such thing as a bad chocolate chip cookie; some are just better (and bigger) than others. The best are Montana Monsters, which, in addition to chocolate, contain peanut butter, oatmeal, butter and raisins. Period. What these big cookies (they are about the size of a saucer) don’t contain is flour.
John Thiede, a former landscape architect, started selling cookies 10 years ago in Bozeman, Mont. He now sells 16,000 cookies a week, mostly in his bakery and at Yellowstone Park. Thiede also publishes a biannual newsletter, “Montana Biscuit Co. News,” about life in this small town of 20,000. “The idea was to try to give people more than just a shiny, glossy-colored catalogue,” he says. “Over the years we’ve had pictures of our friends who hang glide over the Yellowstone Valley, people who raise exotic cattle, and our neighbors, the llamas. I write it all myself.”
Montana Monsters are $25.80 for two dozen, including postage. This is one monster you’ll be glad to welcome into your life.
