Watery Fields: Statewide Sales Co., which farms 250 acres of strawberries along the Santa Ana River, began pumping water from its fields Tuesday. “You try and stay ahead of it,” said Larry Simmons, president of the Los Angeles-based company. “The last thing you want is for the plants to be submerged in water.”
The company’s shed is about two blocks from the river, which remained within its banks during Wednesday’s downpour. But Simmons said he is nervous about a possible overflow.
“Everything’s so far, so good,” he said. “But we’re all going to church tonight.”
