State to Save Bundle on Tuition Ruling

Re “Losing Out on a Dream” (Jan. 23): By the mere act of crossing the border, Jorge Candelaria and Maria Hidalgo became eligible for taxpayer-supported free public education through high school.
Now they are whining that this less-than-perfect country they entered illegally is destroying their dreams of obtaining a subsidized college education.
There are winners in this situation after all. By requiring the estimated 14,000 illegal residents who would be first-time community college students to pay tuition at the same rate as other non-residents, California will save its taxpayers $47 million a year.
