THE MYSTERY OF THE MISSING MOLLUSKS
The excellent article by David Haldane (“The Mystery of the Missing Mollusks,” Jan. 5) should help generate public awareness of the fact that not only are the black abalones mysteriously disappearing, but abalones in general are rapidly becoming extinct.
The Catalina Conservancy, of which I am president, has a support group, the Catalina Conservancy Divers. The group just completed a pilot project in which 500 baby green abalones were planted at Lover’s Cove near Avalon, and plans to eventually plant several thousand abalones in the protected coves along the channel side of Catalina. Perhaps this program will once again make it possible to take abalones without damaging the resource.
