* MCI Communications Corp. said its fourth-quarter profit rose 14%, while earnings for all of 1991 nearly doubled.
The nation’s No. 2 long-distance phone company said it earned $137 million, or 52 cents a share, in the quarter ended Dec. 31, up from $120 million, or 47 cents a common share, in the same quarter of 1990.
Revenue rose almost 8% to $2.16 billion from $2 billion in the 1990 quarter.
Washington-based MCI said it grew at close to double the industry rate for all of 1991. Earnings rose to $522 million, or $2.01 a share, compared to $270 million, or $1.06 a share, in 1990. The 1990 figure includes a one-time charge of $550 million associated with network modernization.
Revenue totaled $8.43 billion, up almost 10% over 1990 revenue of $7.68 billion.
“MCI had a great fourth quarter, a great year, growing profitably despite the continuing recession,” said Bert C. Roberts Jr., president and chief executive. “We expect industry results will show that MCI gained almost a full point of (long-distance) market share in 1991.”
