Speedskater Dan Jansen set a world record of 36.41 seconds in the 500-meter event at an international meet Saturday at Davos, Switzerland.
Jansen improved by .02 seconds a six-day-old mark set by Olympic champion and World Cup leader Uwe-Jens Mey of Germany on the same natural rink at Davos.
Mey, the 1988 Olympic champion in the 500, is not competing in the Davos races--which do not count for the World Cup--because of a hip strain suffered while training Friday. The injury is not expected to hamper his performance at next month’s Winter Olympics.
