COLLEGE BASKETBALL WOMEN’S ROUNDUP : UCLA Gives No. 4 Stanford a Scare

The UCLA women, getting 39 points from Rehema Stephens, gave No. 4-ranked Stanford a scare before falling, 95-92, Saturday night in a Pacific 10 game at Stanford.
Stanford’s Chris MacMurdo scored on a layup with 12 seconds left to make it 94-89, but Stephens hit a three-pointer with four seconds left to give UCLA a final hope.
Molly Goodenbour was fouled immediately and made one of two free throws for Stanford, and UCLA failed to get off a final shot.
Val Whiting tied her personal best with 35 points and grabbed 11 rebounds for Stanford (12-1, 2-1).
Stephens’ 39 points tied her personal best. Natalie Williams had a career-high of 28 points to go with her game-high 15 rebounds, and Lynn Kamrath added another 11 points for UCLA (9-5, 2-2).
UCLA led, 49-47, at halftime, but the Cardinal went on a 22-8 run to start the second half. Stanford led by as many as 13 points twice, but UCLA came back to tie it, 86-86, on a three-point play by Williams.
Christy Hedgpeth scored the next five points for Stanford.
No. 2 California 77, USC 70--The Trojans lost despite leading at halftime, 42-39, at Berkeley.
Trisha Stafford, from Westchester High, had 28 points to lead Cal (11-2, 3-0). Milica Vukadinovic had 21 points and 10 assists.
Kim Gessig had 20 points for USC (8-5, 2-2), and Lisa Leslie scored 18.
USC was within 71-67 after Tracy Adams hit a short jump shot with 1:37 left, but Cal pulled away on four free throws and a layup by Stafford.
Cal shot only 40.4% from the field but made 29 of 36 free throws. USC shot 47.7% but took only six foul shots, making four.
Cal State Long Beach 75, No. 15 Hawaii 54--Trise Jackson scored 23 points and Kellie Bennett added 16 as the 49ers (10-3, 4-0) defeated the Wahines (11-1, 2-1) in a Big West Conference game Friday night at Honolulu.
Hawaii (11-1, 2-1) was the last unbeaten Top 25 team entering the game.
Kari Parriott finished with 10 points for Long Beach.
