HIGH SCHOOL BASKETBALL ROUNDUP : Thompson’s Overtime Points Lift Saugus

Junior guard Mike Thompson scored three points in overtime, including the only field goal on an offensive rebound, and Saugus High defeated Ridgecrest Burroughs, 60-57, Friday night in a Golden League basketball game at Saugus.

Saugus (13-5, 2-1) rallied from a seven-point deficit in the fourth quarter as Chris Hernandez scored nine of his game-high 19 points. With the score tied, 53-53, Saugus held the ball for the final 1 minute 20 seconds of regulation play, but guard Josh Hinrichs missed a last-second shot.

Hinrichs and Steve Tampus each finished with 11 points.

In other boys’ games:

Canyon 61, Antelope Valley 56--Joe Ferguson scored 10 of his 14 points in the fourth quarter as host Canyon (10-8, 2-1) came from behind in a Golden League game.

Ferguson, a senior forward, made four of four shots from the field and two free throws as the Cowboys outscored Antelope Valley, 16-10, in the fourth quarter.

Brent Stout had a game-high 22 points for Canyon.

Quartz Hill 63, Palmdale 61--Guard Daniel Price connected on the game-winning three-point shot with five seconds remaining for host Quartz Hill (10-6, 3-0).

Price, a senior, finished with a game-high 26 points and teammate Erick Taylor added 10 rebounds and nine points. Zurick Sellers led Palmdale with 20 points and Erick Stone had 18.

Santa Clara 59, Nordhoff 46--Isiaah Mustafa and Chris Cole each finished with 15 points as the Saints pulled away in the second half to win a Frontier League game at home.

Cole led Santa Clara (14-3, 3-0) with nine rebounds and teammate Stevie Amar added 12 points. Nacho Vega scored a game-high 22 points for Nordhoff (9-6, 1-1).

Camarillo 50, Royal 48--Jaime Jaquez hit a short jump shot with three seconds remaining and host Camarillo pulled out a Marmonte League victory.

Jimmy Harbour scored 16 points and Geoff Gordon added 12 points and 12 rebounds for Camarillo (3-10, 1-4). Brett Osterhondt led Royal (4-11, 1-4) with 17 points.

Simi Valley 59, Westlake 48--Danny Alexander scored 29 points and had 11 rebounds to lead the Pioneers (13-3, 4-1) to a Marmonte League win at Westlake. Teammate Kevin DeJong added 10 points. Joey Leavitt led Westlake (6-8, 2-3) with 16 points and 14 rebounds and Lonny Chavez had 10 points.

Crescenta 80, Hoover 51--Josh Willis had 26 points and eight rebounds, and Brendon Cowsill added 20 points and 10 rebounds for host Crescenta Valley (10-8, 2-1) in a Pacific League game. Ed Molina added 18 points for Crescenta Valley. Chad Reese led Hoover (9-9, 1-2) with 18 points.

Newbury Park 73, Channel Islands 59--Robert Fick scored 18 points and Sean McKeown had 14 points and 18 rebounds for the Panthers (8-6, 3-2) in a Marmonte League game at Newbury Park.

Rio Mesa 62, Dos Pueblos 35--Jade Peterson had 12 points and David Halvorsen added 10 for host Rio Mesa (7-7, 3-2) in a Channel League game.

Hueneme 65, Ventura 63--Wendell Nunnery hit a pair of free throws with eight seconds remaining for host Hueneme (9-7, 2-3). Nunnery finished with 19 points and teammate Tony Smith added 18. Ventura (11-5, 2-3) received 15 points each from Randy Martinez and Curt Vaughan.

Buena 77, Oxnard 58--Lance Fay had 30 points as visiting Buena improved to 5-0 in Channel League play. Larry Bumpus had 22 points for Oxnard.

St. Bernard 72, Notre Dame 62--Glen Carson (20), Monte Marcaccini (17) and Damon Germanides (14) scored in double figures for Notre Dame (2-3 in league play) but ran into foul trouble in the final period after trailing by one with two minutes left.

Muir 54, Glendale 43--Mike Wright had 18 points and four blocks for host Glendale.

Hart 84, Burbank 67--Matt Steffe scored 33 points and had 10 rebounds for host Hart in a Foothill League game. Ali Peek added 18 points and 21 rebounds for Hart (10-7, 2-0). Ken Vudmaska and Kendrick Lewis each had 15 points for Burbank.

Campbell Hall 53, Brentwood 52--C.J. Thompkins’ two free throws with 14 seconds left lifted Campbell Hall (9-6, 3-2) in a Delphic League game.

Littlerock 78, Highland 61--James Cain had 20 points and 14 rebounds and Mitch Casey hit six of seven free throws down the stretch as the host Lobos (13-3) avenged a one-point loss last week in a nonleague game. Pharoah Davis scored 28 for Highland.

Highland Hall 39, Oak Hill 28--Jules Holbrook scored 13 points and Dave Antrim added 11 for host Highland Hall (6-4, 2-1) in a Westside League game. Craig Huxford led Oak Hill (0-11) with 12 points.

Providence 70, Oakwood 66--Barry Dabbaghian had 27 points and 15 rebounds, and visiting Providence sank 10 of 11 free throws in the fourth quarter on the Liberty League game. Ernesto Godinez had 14 points and Hagop Yaglian added 12 for Providence (7-7, 2-1). Brandon DiMassa (28 points) and Steve Slome (22) led Oakwood (3-8, 0-3).

L.A. Baptist 65, Western Christian 31--Mark Heerema scored 26 points in only three quarters as the Knights (10-4, 2-0) remained undefeated in Alpha League play. Max Lile added nine points and 10 assists.

Village Christian 63, Marshall Fundamental 57--David Fennell had 26 points and 10 rebounds and Vic Blazano added 24 points and 14 rebounds for the host Crusaders.

GIRLS

Burbank 45, Alhambra 43--Jeanie Russell totaled 15 points and seven rebounds as Burroughs (10-6, 1-1) won a Foothill League game in overtime.

Glendale 51, Muir 35--Host Glendale (12-7, 2-1) was missing two starters and finished the game with only four players but still managed to win the Pacific League game behind the play of Jenny Dalton (22 points, 20 rebounds, six assists) and Tracy Young (20 points, 10 rebounds, three steals).

Highland Hall 32, Cornerstone Christian 16--Kristen Johansen scored 24 points and the Hawks (9-0) held host Cornerstone Christian to four points in the second half in a nonleague game.

Westlake 63, Simi Valley 21--Lauren Goldstine scored 20 points and had 13 rebounds, while Marlee Organ added 12 points and nine steals for the Warriors (13-3, 5-0) in a Marmonte League contest.

Calabasas 48, Fillmore 47--Tammy Finazzo, Melissa Krolike and Nicole Rose combined for 35 points and 43 rebounds as the Coyotes (2-9, 1-2) posted their first Frontier League victory in four years.
