Carlsbad Girls Rally for Victory

Fourth-ranked Carlsbad overcame a 12-point third-quarter deficit and beat third-ranked Rancho Bernardo in its home gym Friday, 60-54, and took the upper hand in the Avocado League girls’ basketball race.
Vanessa Nygaard scored a game-high 20 points, and Holly Gerdes scored 16 of her 17 points in the second half for Carlsbad (9-2, 4-0).
“My kids don’t quit,” Carlsbad Coach John Dubreville said. “When the pressure’s on, I think we play better.”
Rancho Bernardo (12-2, 3-1) led 45-35 a minute into the fourth quarter, but made only four more field goals and was outscored 27-13 in the final period. Carlsbad converted 13 of 13 from the free-throw line in the final quarter.

Point Loma 43, Mira Mesa 34--Sara Baczynski’s 17 points paced No. 5 Point Loma (13-1, 1-0) in a City Eastern League game.
El Cajon Valley 79, Grossmont 46--Heather Holm led 10th-ranked El Cajon with 24 points and seven assists. Chris Reardon added 22 for the Braves (13-3).
GIRLS’ SOCCER
San Dieguito 3, Vista 0--Allie Kemp, Erin Drown and Maggie Merritt scored as the Mustangs (12-0, 4-0) continued their undefeated streak in a Palomar League game. It was San Dieguito’s 10th shutout and 81st goal scored.
