Firefighters, Slowed by Bars, Find Body in House

Firefighters slowed by security bars on the doors and windows of a small home in Los Angeles on Friday found the charred body of an elderly resident after the flames were extinguished.
The blaze broke out at 9:51 a.m. in the single-family house in the 5000 block of South 11th Avenue, said city Fire Department spokesman Jim Wells.
It took about a dozen firefighters 17 minutes to extinguish the flames, Wells said, but “the house had strong bars on the windows and doors, making access into the structure difficult.” The cause of the fire is under investigation, he said.
Investigators believe that the victim, whose body was badly burned, was a man, Wells said. The body was found in a back bedroom.
