Groups Urge 300 Acres Be Part of Park Bond

Two Santa Clarita environmental groups proposed Thursday that Los Angeles County include 300 acres of land scheduled for development in a park bond issue.
The land west of the Golden State Freeway near McBean Parkway is included in a 1,872-unit housing development and golf course proposed by Newhall Land & Farming Co., but it is also designated as one of the county’s significant ecological areas because of its stand of large valley oaks.
In a news conference at the site Thursday, representatives of the Santa Clarita Organization for Planning the Environment and the Santa Clarita Oak Conservancy said that the property should become Valley Oak Park.
The groups urged county supervisors to include the park, which they estimated would cost about $6 million to develop, in a park and recreation bond act scheduled to go before voters sometime this year.
