ROUNDUP : Buena Park Again Edges Saddleback

Josh Hourtal and Gavin Molinar each made two free throws in the final 16 seconds to seal Buena Park’s 56-53 victory over Saddleback in a nonleague boys’ basketball game Friday night at Buena Park High School.
The game was a rematch of the Dec. 20 Fullerton tournament championship game, which Buena Park won, 58-57, in overtime.
With 2 minutes 30 seconds remaining, Buena Park point guard Joe Clarkson made a three-pointer to cut Saddleback’s lead to 50-48.
Hourtal, who scored a team-high 14 points, gave Buena Park (11-2) the lead for good when he made two free throws with 16 seconds remaining for a 54-52 lead. Buena Park made 20 of 23 free throws in the game.
With 10 seconds remaining, Luis Estrella made the front end of a one-and-one for Saddleback to cut the lead to 54-53, but he missed the second foul shot and Molinar was fouled after grabbing the rebound.
After Molinar made both ends of a one-and-one with eight seconds remaining to give Buena Park a 56-53 lead, Saddleback’s Jason Register, who scored a game-high 21 points, had a chance to tie the game but missed a three-pointer at the buzzer.
In other nonleague boys’ basketball:
Orange 61, Costa Mesa 50--Jamiel Worthem scored 10 of his 20 points in the second and third quarters as the host Panthers (7-5) overcame a five-point first-quarter deficit.
Costa Mesa center Jeff Pickens led all scorers with 21 points.
Century 64, Los Amigos 50--Los Amigos led by seven points early in the fourth quarter, but Century’s full-court press took its toll, helping the Centurions outscore Los Amigos, 27-10, in the fourth quarter. Chris Blythe had 18 points and 10 rebounds for host Los Amigos (2-6). Damien Hamler scored 14 points for Century.
El Modena 49, Dana Hills 46--El Modena led by nine points in the fourth quarter, but with a minute left, Dana Hills closed the gap to 46-44 before El Modena scored its final three points. Aaron Aguilera scored 18 points for El Modena. Dan Anderson scored 13 points for Dana Hills (1-12).
El Toro 67, Newport Harbor 54--Sophomore forward Jeff Bone made four three-pointers in the second quarter and scored a game-high 21 points, and Jason Senik scored 20 points for El Toro.
Katella 63, Westminster 52--Forward Brian Carlson had 28 points and 17 rebounds and Lee Jones added 15 points and 13 rebounds as the Knights (4-7) won at home.
Laguna Beach 71, Corona del Mar 59--The game was tied at halftime, but Laguna Beach went on a 9-0 third-quarter run and maintained at least an eight-point lead the rest of the game. Darren Gravley scored 25 points and had five assists for the Artists (8-4). Theo Rokos scored 19 points for Corona del Mar (7-6).
Los Alamitos 80, Fullerton 48--Jason Cunningham had 20 points and 10 rebounds for host Los Alamitos (6-8).
Savanna 60, Canyon 38--Tobie Priest scored 28 points and Marlon Watson had 14 for visiting Savanna (9-4), which outscored Canyon, 38-19, in the second half.
Sonora 61, Brea-Olinda 55--James Cannaday scored 25 points and had eight rebounds for Sonora (9-5). Drew Hubbard scored 15 points for Brea-Olinda.
Troy 62, Valencia 56--Santiago Allen had 23 points and Jim Falletta 17 as the host Warriors improved to 9-5. Adolfo Gomez led Valencia (8-3) with 17 points and Marc O’Brien added 14.
Western 62, Cerritos Valley Christian 33--Neil Hensley and Ed Ingram each scored 15 points for host Western (9-3). The Pioneers forced 19 Valley Christian turnovers as the Crusaders made only four of 25 shots in the second half.
In the Santa Maria Valley Christian boys’ basketball tournament:
St. Michael’s 70, Midway Baptist 49--Jon Grobler scored 33 points and Jocques Wright added 23 for St. Michael’s in a consolation-round game.
In the Santiago girls’ basketball tournament:
El Modena 40, Santiago 33--Despite 30 turnovers, El Modena (3-4) held Santiago to eight first half points and held on for the victory in a championship semifinal. Melizza Benitez led El Modena with 11 points, and Jamie Meadows added six points and 13 rebounds. El Modena plays Newport Harbor in the championship game at 8 tonight.
Newport Harbor 74, Fullerton 41--Junior Kala Ross scored 24 points for the Sailors in the other semifinal. Newport Harbor center Maureen McLaren added 13 points and 10 rebounds.
In nonleague girls’ basketball:
Capistrano Valley 51, Mater Dei 34--Angie White scored 13 points and Katie Scott scored 10 for Capistrano Valley (13-1). Teammate Alisa Farr had six assists and eight steals.
Los Alamitos 37, Magnolia 28--Jhamara French had 22 rebounds and 11 points for Los Alamitos (8-5).
Troy 53, Garden Grove 35--Dede Logemann scored 20 points and had eight rebounds to lead Troy (5-3) at Garden Grove. Brandee Richardson had 14 rebounds and seven blocked shots, and Jenny Gadd, a 6-3 freshman, scored 11 points for Troy.
University 45, Irvine 17--Ashleigh Cross scored eight points for University (7-5), which won its fifth consecutive game.
