‘92 Race for the Presidency

Craig Shirley, in his article “Give Buchanan and the Right Their Due” (Column Right, Dec. 22) misses the historical significance of Patrick J. Buchanan’s run for the presidency. This is a battle for the soul of the Republican Party, not some minor political quarrel.

Traditional Republican Party ideology can be best characterized by the policies of the late Sen. Robert A. Taft (R-Ohio). Generally referred to as the “America First” platform, those policies include protecting American economic interests through fair trade for American workers, not free trade for Japan and Mexico; a tax structure that aids success, does not hinder it, and a strong sense of nationalism, not the globalist policies of some fanciful “new world order.”

By masterfully articulating these policies, Buchanan has become the legitimate heir to Robert A. Taft and the Republican Party.
