A package addressed to Gov. Pete Wilson and containing a bomb was discovered in the mail room of the governor’s Capitol office last week and removed without incident, officials said. “We were pretty lucky on this,” said James Lee, a spokesman for the governor. A member of the governor’s staff found the explosive device Saturday inside a package mailed to the governor, officials said. Investigators refused to comment on the type of explosive found. The box, described as having a spring-loaded lid, was filled with explosive powder and small rocks to serve as shrapnel, according to an anonymous Sacramento-area law enforcement officer quoted in the San Jose Mercury News. The State Police bomb squad removed the package from the Capitol without incident, officials said.
