Gulls’ Kvartalnov, Hachborn Named All-Stars

Two members of the Gulls’ “Hot Line,†Dimitri Kvartalnov and Len Hachborn, were named Monday to the West squad for the IHL’s All-Star game Feb. 2 in Atlanta.

Kvartalnov and Hachborn, new to the Gulls this season, combined with linemate and 1990-91 veteran Robbie Nichols to scored 26 points (11 goals, 15 assists) in three games last week, when the Gulls were 2-0-1 and moved into second place in the IHL West.

Kvartalnov tallied 10 points and Hachborn had nine for the week. They are the top two scorers in the league. Eight more players for each All-Star team will be chosen later this week.

MEN’S BASKETBALL

UC San Diego gave Washington a scare before the Huskies shrugged off a slow start en route to a 77-53 victory over the Tritons in Seattle.

The Huskies went on a 10-0 run early in the game to go ahead 14-6, but UCSD tied the game at 16 and stayed close the rest of the half.

After leading 34-30 at halftime, the Huskies (5-3) outscored the Tritons (5-4) 43-23 in the second half.

Chris Moore, who make four of six field goals to keep the Tritons close in the first half, had 11 points. Teammate John Spence added eight points, including two 3-pointers.

Rich Manning, a Syracuse transfer, scored 17 of his career-high 23 points in the second half.

WOMEN’S BASKETBALL

In the third-place game of the UCSD Invitational, the Tritons defeated Occidental, 73-49. Tricia Stilwell (17 points), Molly Jonnum (16) and Lisa Beaver (14), who was named to the all-tournament team, led UCSD (6-3). Occidental fell to 3-7.

In the championship, Concordia (Wis.) nudged Gustavus Adolphus (Minn.), 60-59. Tournament MVP Stacy Winkelman led Concordia with 18 points. Susan Duchow added 15 for the winners.

Chris Enger led the University of San Diego to an 81-55 nonconference victory against Weber State at home. Enger had 17 points for the Toreras, who improved to 8-6. Teammate Lynda Jones added 13 points and eight rebounds. Weber State fell to 5-6.

San Diego State improved to 6-3 by defeating Iona (N.Y.), 83-51. Michelle Suman, who was 10 for 12 from the field, scored 25 and pulled down nine rebounds to lead SDSU in the nonconference game. Teammate Tammy Blackburn was nine of 10 from the field and finished with 19 points.
